Jazzorchester Steiermark - dir. Sigi Feigl

Michael Abene, certainly one of the most important arrangeurs and composers of the international jazz scene – GRP All Stars, WDR Big Band, two Grammies - is currently teaching at the Jazz Institute of the University of Arts in Graz. He had heard Karlheinz Miklin several times with different groups and got interested into his music, then offered to write arrangements for a big band CD with compositions of the saxophonist - an unexpected and very honorable invitation.

Sigi Feigl - number one among the big band conductors in our country - put together a "Jazzorchester Steiermark".

The premier took place 21st November 2016 at the packed "ORHEUM" in Graz, critics wrote of a „milestone of jazz“. The CD was recorded in December and released in March 2017 with „Alessa records“, the first  presentation concerts ended with standing ovations.

40 years Karlheinz Miklin Trio

This year the Karlheinz Miklin Trio celebrates its 40th anniversary.

On April 28, 1978, the group played their first concert in Graz M59.

Festivals and Masterclasses in Argentina

In November 2015 Karlheinz Miklin toured intensively in Argentina. He played the festivals Cordoba and Buenos Aires, the first with the quartet of the known bass player Milton Arias, the second open air with his Quinteto Argentina. In a club concert under the topic "cruces" (crossing) he performed with an ad hoc group of musicians of the festival (Sergio Wagner tp, Lupa Santiago g, Arturo Puertas b und Luis Ceravolo d).

In the renowned series "Jazzologia" in Buenos Aires guitar player Ricardo Lew, one of the early members of the Quinteto, was invited to the group. The concert was recorded by TV Buenos Aires.

Miklin played for the first time in General Pico (La Pampa), the home town of guitar player Marcelo Mayor, and other concerts. The tour included performances with five different groups. Additionally he gave masterclasses at the Buenos Aires festival among others.

30 years Billy HART - Karlheinz MIKLIN

MIKLIN - KAENZIG - HART

Tour October 2017

Since 1987 the Austrian reed player and the American legend have been

playing together in different formations frequently, documented by five CDs.

In recent years, Billy Hart has experienced a large and long since deserved

career boost, is celebrated guest at large festivals, released several CDs with the prestigious ECM label under his own name and was voted #1 drummer in the polls of "American Jazz Journalists" and "Modern Drummer“.  He has also completed most of his European projects, so it looked as if the trio tour 2015 would have been the last one.

At a concert in New York in December 2016 Billy assured his Austrian colleague "but with you it's different" and that he would like to continue. A great honor and challenge for Karlheinz Miklin, to celebrate the 30-year anniversary  with one of the greatest of the jazz scene on various stages in October.

Also Heiri Kaenzig, one of the most employed bass players in the European scene for decades, has decided to be more selective concerning the performimgs he would take part and only play in projects he really feels worthwhile . The better that he will continue with the trio.

Performances at the Salzburg festival "Jazz & the City", the "Graz Jazznight " and the "Porgy & Bess" in Vienna are among others on the program.

1981 saw the first international success at the Belgrade Jazz Festival, followed by the most important Austrian festivals such as Wiesen, Saalfelden, Bregenzer Festspiele, Wiener Festwochen over the next few years.

Soon the trio played at festivals around the world such as "Umbria Jazz" Perugia, "Jazz Jamboree" Warsaw, "Mostra de Jazz Europeu" Barcelona, "Belga Jazz Festival" Brussels, "Yatra Jazz Festival" India, "Jazz at Hermitage Garden" Moscow, "Bilsak Festival" Istanbul, "Jazz Peak" Sofia,

“Standard Bank Festival" Grahamstown (South Africa) ... and in clubs like "100 Club” London, “Bim Huis" Amsterdam, "Café Central"  Madrid, "Blues Alley" Washington, "Nos Fundos" Sao Paulo, "La zorra y el cuervo" Havana.

Guests such as Albert Mangelsdorff, Art Farmer, Enrico Rava, Fritz Pauer and most of all the vocalists Sheila Jordan and Mark Murphy shared the stage with the trio, whose music is documented on nine LP / CDs.

Concerts in Bruck (Stadtsaal) 15.4., Voelkermarkt (STEP) 27.4., Feldbach (Zentrum) 30.4. and Graz (Stockwerk) 8.6. are dedicated to this anniversary.

After thirty years with "Quinteto Argentina", Karlheinz Miklin turned to Brazilian music, several tours aroused his interest in the very rich music of this country. Now the saxophonist also performs  with young Brazilian musicians in Europe. The members of the group have already made a name for themselves through a variety of projects, are bandleaders, too, and had become important proponents of our scene. Excellent reviews e.g. in the "Down Beat" document their international reputation.

After many concerts, the first CD was recorded. "Medio azul" offers a diverse cross section of compositions and arrangements by Karlheinz Miklin and the band members as well as Brazilian standards. Samba, Bossa Nova, Choro get new, refreshing colors through the interplay of an experienced jazz musician with young, upstanding "native speakers" of these genre.
